The history of Pontiac dates back to 1893, when the company began building horse-drawn carriages under the Pontiac buggy company. Pontiac did not start building cars until 1926. The first two Pontiac automobile models were a coupe and sedan. These models make for stylish but hard to find Pontiac rat rods. Most people don’t realize, until the early Pontiacs, most cars had fabric tops. Pontiac’s models were closed compartments, offering better shelter for the driver and passengers. This offers rat rod builders an alternative to consider when building a custom Pontiac rat rod. In 1926 Pontiac sold 76,742 cars.

Pontiac was slowly acquired by General Motors, purchasing half of the Oakland Car Company (Pontiac) in 1909. Pontiac manufactured many cars in the early years to present, offering many Pontiac rat rods for sale. Although not highly popular among rat rod builders, Pontiac cars offer many opportunities for diverse builds.
